Health and Safety Tips for Working on a Cruise Ship

Updated: Aug 14, 2023

Despite contrary beliefs, cruise ships are one of the safest travel methods. However, there are still safety concerns you need to be aware of.

Here are a few tips to help you stay safe while working on a cruise ship.

Attend Safety Meetings and Training

All crew members must attend safety meetings and training before and during the cruise. Having done first aid training beforehand will be a bonus skill to acquire if it isn't a requirement already. During these meetings and training, you'll learn skills that will teach you how to keep the passengers safe and calm in case an emergency arises. You must know the placement and amount of all safety equipment, especially fire extinguishers, first aid kits, lifejackets, and life rafts. Also, make sure to memorize all emergency alarm systems and terminology- including crew alerts, the General Emergency Signal (GES), and the man overboard signal. During an emergency, keep yourself calm and do not panic this will allow you to think more clearly and logically.

Don't Drink and Party Too Hard

When intoxicated, people don't think reasonably and responsibly. Drinking can also cause injuries as people become reckless. It's important to not drink at all while on the job. Not only will this keep you alert and productive, but it will also keep you capable in case an emergency breaks out. Keep an eye out for any passengers drinking and keep them safe from any harm.

Don't Go Anywhere Alone

As soon as you settle in onboard, make sure that you establish a "buddy system". This "buddy" can even be your roommate. Going anywhere alone is dangerous, especially in a country you don't know well. Don't go anywhere alone with strangers, either. Going places with your buddy also lessens the risk of you getting lost. Your "buddy" can help hold you accountable to stick to your working hours and that you attend all of your meetings. Make sure you update them on your whereabouts regularly. "Buddies" can also help you when you get sick or injured. They are your surrogate family while on board.

Keep Yourself Healthy

When working on board, you must take care of your physical health. By doing this, you will remain energized and alert during those long working hours. One way you can do this is by eating nutritious and balanced meals. Many crew members have access to certain PAX restaurants, providing you with plenty of food options. Staying fit and mobile is also necessary, especially if you do a lot of walking around and carrying heavy equipment during working hours. Crew members have their own crew gym, and some also have access to PAX gyms. Stay hydrated by drinking lots of water to help with any symptoms of seasickness. Make sure that you're well rested by getting enough sleep every day. Also, don't forget to take any medication necessary and keep them stocked up.

Use these tips to help prevent your cruise ship experience from becoming negative. These are not things you want to worry about when you're travelling. But, it is important to remain cautious for both your safety and the safety of others.
